Bilbo Bessac or Bilbo Baggins is the central character in the novel The Hobbit by British author J. R. R. Tolkien. He is also a secondary character in The Lord of the Rings, and appears in the Unfinished Legends.
Within Tolkien's legendarium, the writings of Middle-earth are presented as translations of the Red Book of the Western March. Bilbo is supposed to have written The Hobbit and transcribed The Silmarillion.
