Harry Potter is a fantasy novel and play comprising seven novels and one play, written by J. K. Rowling and published between 1997 and 2016. It has been translated into French by Jean-François Ménard.
It follows the adventures of an apprentice wizard named Harry Potter and his friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, run by Albus Dumbledore. The main plot of the series focuses on young Harry Potter's battle against a reputedly immortal and super-powerful dark wizard, Lord Voldemort, who once killed his parents. Voldemort, who leads a loyal group of dark wizards known as the Death Eaters, has been trying to take over the wizarding world for decades.
In 2016, the script for a play called Harry Potter And The Cursed Child, written by Jack Thorne (a fan of the series) and directed by John Tiffany, was also published. The play was produced by JK Rowling but was not an official sequel to the saga, although it featured the characters from the novels and recounted their adventures after the end of the last book.
Eight successful films (the last novel having been split into two parts released eight months apart), as well as video games and numerous other spin-off products have been adapted from the series of novels.
