Description
Scabbers is Ron Weasley's rat. He first appeared in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. Once owned by Ron's older brother Percy Wesley, Scabbers is an unusually old rat for his species, usually living no more than three years. He has been in the Weasley family for 12 years! He will have a decisive role in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Indeed, it is in this
film that we learn the true identity of Scabbers: he is none other than Peter Pettigrew
Peter Pettigrew, nicknamed Wormtail, is a wizard who was friends with James Potter, Sirius Black and Remus Lupin. The group of friends called themselves the Marauders and together they created the famous map of the same name. During the First Wizarding War, Peter did not hesitate to betray his friends. It was he who revealed to Lord Voldemort where the Potter family was hiding, thereby condemning Harry Potter's parents. He arranged for Sirius Black to be blamed for the murders instead of him by faking his own death. He remained transformed into a rat for many years for fear of retribution. He was adopted by a family of wizards (the Weasleys) to keep in touch with the magical world and to watch for a possible return of his master Lord Voldemort.
